The PBA Press Corps has introduced the Ramon Fernandez Trophy for the Finals MVP, honoring the league’s legendary player with 19 championships on its 50th season. This new award replaces plaques and starts with the Philippine Cup Finals. Ramon Fernandez himself expressed deep gratitude for the recognition.

Fernandez’s Legacy

Ramon Fernandez holds PBA records including 18,996 career points, 8,652 rebounds, and 1,853 blocks over 20 seasons. He won nine titles with Toyota, three with Tanduay, and seven with San Miguel Beer, including the 1989 Grand Slam. Averaging 17.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.9 assists, he earned four MVP awards and shaped the league’s standards of leadership and resilience.

Award Introduction

The Press Corps, led by Vladimir Eduarte, got Fernandez’s blessing at the 50th season opener on October 5, 2025. It marks 30 years since their first Finals MVP award to Jojo Lastimosa in 1996. Voters are active PBA beat writers, emphasizing Fernandez’s enduring impact without an MVP award in his era.

Fernandez’s Reaction

In his statement, Fernandez called it “something I never imagined yet will forever treasure,” crediting the PBA for teaching discipline, sacrifice, and teamwork. He views the league as his “battlefield, classroom, and home.” The trophy immortalizes his 1,074 games and top rankings in minutes, free throws, and steals.
